What Is Gutter Installation & Repair?

Gutters protect your foundation and siding by channeling roof runoff away from the structure — properly sized and installed gutters prevent significant water damage annually.

Seamless vs. Sectional

Seamless gutters (fabricated on-site from a continuous aluminum coil) have no seams except at corners and downspouts — the most common failure points in sectional gutters. Seamless systems leak significantly less and last longer. For professional installation, seamless K-style aluminum is the standard residential choice.

Sizing

Undersized gutters overflow during heavy rain near the foundation. Standard 5-inch K-style gutters handle most homes; 6-inch for large roof areas or high rainfall. Downspout count matters as much as width — every 20–30 linear feet of gutter, one downspout.

Gutter Guards

Micro-mesh guards (LeafFilter, MasterShield) are most effective at keeping debris out — cost $1,500–$4,000+ for an average home. Foam, brush, and screen inserts are less effective. No guard is truly maintenance-free — inspect annually.

Proper Drainage Extension

Downspouts should extend water at least 6 feet from the foundation. Underground extensions to daylight or a dry well are most effective. Downspout water discharged near the foundation causes both basement seepage and foundation settlement in expansive soil areas.

What to Look for in a Roofing Provider

• State roofing contractor license and general liability insurance (minimum $1M)
• Workers' compensation coverage — critical, as roofing is a high-injury trade
• Manufacturer certification (GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Preferred, etc.) for enhanced warranties
• Local reputation: a contractor with years of work in your specific city knows local code requirements
• Written material specifications in the estimate — not just a total price
• Proper permit pulled for replacement (required in most jurisdictions)
